Itinerary

Upon arrival at Yundum International Airport, proceed through immigrations, claim luggage, and clear Custom procedures. You will meet your Tour guide and then drive to the hotel for check-in. You will be briefed about your next day’s stay in the Gambia.

Day 2 :

After breakfast, we will start the Gambia city tour at Serekunda, the largest town in the country, where you will visit the ‘tie and dye’ batik factory. After, we will head to the capital, Banjul and visit its national museum which hold the history of the West African kingdoms before and after colonialism A stop at the the Albert’s Market, where African Souvenirs can be purchased, and on the way, we will discover the Arch22 being the tallest structure in this city, and symbol of the military coup date of July 1994. We will drive one hour to the Makasutu cultural forest. Makasutu is a palm forest situated on the banks of a beautiful meandering tributary of the Gambia river (Madina Bolon), encompassing many different ecosystems including dense forest, savanna and mangrove regions. The environment encompassing this forest is home to hundreds of varieties of birds, different species of monkeys, monitor lizards, pygmy deer, man goose to name but a few-and if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of migrating baboons, that make the forest their home for a number of months each year. Late afternoon drive to hotel.

We will have breakfast and drive to the sacred crocodile pool in Bakau, where you will have an inside visit of the traditional museum before walking around the pool. For years it started as a holy place to address fertility issues and it still is today. This we be followed by a drive South to Kartong at the reptile farm. Once there you will get the information about the different reptiles, and about their biology. You can even hold some of the non-dangerous ones. This farm is place to protect those species, which are under threat of the poaches for their shells, skin, etc.… Drive back to hotel to rest.

Our breakfast will be followed by an excursion to Abuko Nature Reserve, which is a real piece of jungle with footpaths where you can see different animals such as crocodiles, antelopes, monkeys, vultures, etc. It also has a section where animals are kept behind fences, for example hyenas and dangerous ones. Continuation next to discover Lamin Lodge, located on the South bank of the Gambia River. Lamin lodge is a place with a restaurant, where you can start a guided boat trip through the bolongs (creeks) in traditional boats. You will see and learn how the shells of the oysters, collected by the local women in the mangrove forest, are processed into lime for making cement and white paint. During a nice boat tripon the river, you will visit an authentic village hidden in the forest, where you can see the way of life of the Gambians inlands. There we will meet and interact with them. Breakfast and Lunch,

After an early breakfast, we will check out for 2 days before coming back. You will be picked up from the hotel and drive to Banjul, the capital city There we will board the ferry to Barra, to experience the hustle and bustle with the local people Once at the other side of the river, we will start our trip to Jufureh and Albreda for retracing the origins and the history of Kunta Kinteh, the Gambian who was taken to the Americas. At Albreda, you will see the freedom flag pole and also visit the slave museum. We will visit Jufureh, which is the village of the famous slave who was forced into slavery in the mid-seventeenth century, Kunta Kinteh. It is on whom Alex Haley has based the history of his best seller Roots, which retraces the event of the transatlantic slave trade. By boat we will visit the Island and get some explanation from our local guide. Once back on the main land, head to the border for customs formalities to arrive at the Senegal side. For 2 days, our excursions will take place next to the Senegambian border. Drive to the lodge for rest. Overnight at Keur Saloum Lodge.

Our breakfast will be followed by and driving to the Fathala Game Park, which is located at 12 Kilometers of the North of The Gambian / Senegalese border in Senegal. In the reserve, we will embark into Jeeps and enjoy the natural environment of the bush and get the chance to spot animals as zebras, rhinoceros, giraffes, monkey and many more. After this Safari, let us experience some adrenaline rush, to walk with the lions. www.continenttours.com Take the opportunity to interact with lions and accompany them on foot. Back to the hotel for a boat riding on the Saloum river, the return of the birds to their nests at sunset will be a breathtaking spectacle. Ride back to the lodge.

We will have breakfast and following the Gambian rhythm, travel back after the border’s formalities one more time. The unscheduled ferry may help us to cross back on Banjul city. Check in at the hotel to and rest.
